Solo strategy that holds up against the AI
Strategy games live or die by their AI when you're offline. A weak computer opponent turns a clever system into a boring one. So I spend most of my review time poking at how the AI behaves under pressure.
Grid Tactics Command does better than most. It flanks, it uses the fog of war, and it doesn't make obviously dumb moves. It can play a bit too cautiously, but it never handed me a free win.
For anyone new to tactics games, start with the smallest maps. Fewer units means you can see cause and effect clearly, and you learn why losing a position hurts before the maps get big.
The joy of a good skirmish is replaying the same map until you win cleanly. When the AI is solid, that loop is endlessly satisfying — and it all works with the phone in airplane mode.
